Two farm workers foiled a farm attack in Schweizer-Reneke by opening fire on the intruders while they were breaking open the kitchen door, Beeld reported on Monday.

One of the assailants was reported to be a police officer.

“We watched them and when they broke open the door, I shot one of them in the leg,” said foreman Hendrik Eksteen.

The intruder’s accomplices ran away.

Eksteen and another worker, Abraham Sesing, both live with 80-year-old farmer, Toby van der Heever, who is an invalid, his wife and their 10-year-old son in the farm house.

Sesing had just helped Van der Heever to his bed around 2am on Saturday when he heard the dogs bark and a noise in the kitchen and called Eksteen.

The intruder who was shot was arrested, while the man who drove the getaway car was said to be a police officer.

He was arrested by police after being spotted near the farm in the getaway car.

Both men would appear in the Schweizer-Reneke Magistrate’s Court on Monday. – Sapa
